Today we began the trekking portion of our trip with thick fog in the morning brought by a small passing weather system, but we enjoyed wonderful sunny views in the afternoon. We are camped above Laguna San Francisco at around 14,800 ft tonight in a narrow remote valley surrounded by glaciated peaks.

The Hypoxic Hill Hoppers Summit Illimani
Posted on June 26, 2026
The Hypoxic Hill Hoppers made the summit of Illimani (21,125 ft)! The route was in pretty perfect condition and the views were excellent, but the summit was windy enough that we didn’t get a good team summit photo. But we did snap a team photo with all of the cooks, guides, and climbers together back in base camp.
And that’s a wrap for the Alpine Ascents mountaineering season in Bolivia. We’ll move on next to the trekking portion of our Bolivia season with a trek across the Cordillera Real.

Hypoxic Hill Hoppers at Illimani Base Camp
Posted on June 22, 2026
The team drove from La Paz to the base camp of Illimani today. Today was June 21st, the winter solstice and the Aymara New Year, celebrated in rural communities here with early morning village gatherings in the cold winter temperatures to receive the first rays of the sunrise followed by music and dancing.
