Great Peaks of Bolivia Cybercast

The team drove from La Paz to the base camp of Illimani today. Today was June 21st, the winter solstice and the Aymara New Year, celebrated in rural communities here with early morning village gatherings in the cold winter temperatures to receive the first rays of the sunrise followed by music and dancing.

The team summited Huayna Potosi (19974 ft) today on a very cold clear morning with a route in perfect condition. We’ll take a rest day in La Paz tomorrow and then part of our team will continue to the Illimani Extension. 

We hiked from the Condoriri Base Camp down to the village of Tuni and spent the afternoon getting cleaned up and refreshed with hot showers! And our team is animal obsessed, so of course we had to go watch the alpacas getting cozied up in their pen for the night….
