The Alpine Ascents Way

Our 3-Day Backpacking Course is shaped by the same values that define Alpine Ascents across all of our programs: exceptional guiding, thoughtful instruction, and a commitment to helping every participant build the confidence and skills to travel independently in the backcountry. While many outfitters focus solely on mileage or reaching a destination, our approach is rooted in education. We believe that a well-designed backpacking course not only brings people into beautiful terrain, but also equips them with the judgment, systems, and self-reliance needed to plan and execute their own future adventures.

The backbone of this program is our world-class guide team. Our guides are full-time professionals, many with storied climbing achievements and decades of field experience—who are part of Alpine Ascents because they share our instructional philosophy and our dedication to passing on excellence. Their role extends far beyond leading a group from camp to camp: they are educators who cultivate situational awareness, model sound decision-making, and support each student’s individual development. Their success is measured not by how quickly a group moves, but by how well each participant absorbs skills and gains confidence.

Since 1986, Alpine Ascents has been committed to teaching people how to move safely and confidently through wild places. The 3-Day Backpacking Course carries that tradition forward, offering a transformative introduction to backcountry travel that prepares future backpackers, climbers, and mountaineers for a lifetime of exploration.

About the Course

The stunning wilderness of the Pacific Northwest provides the setting for this skills-driven course in trip planning, food preparation, survival, and minimum-impact camping skills. It provides a wealth of knowledge for those who want to seriously embrace the rigors of backcountry travel. From the hanging glaciers and craggy peaks of the North Cascades to the sweeping panoramas and heather meadows of the Glacier Peak Wilderness, backpacking allows for a truly immersive wilderness experience, free from the limits of a day hike. With a flexible itinerary, we select the ideal route based on weather, trail conditions, and group goals.

This three-day program is designed to give aspiring mountaineers and backcountry hikers a strong foundation in the essential skills needed for safe, competent, and enjoyable wilderness travel. Throughout the course, participants learn how to select and pack gear efficiently, plan nutritious backcountry menus, cook in camp, and practice sound campcraft. Instruction includes core wilderness knowledge such as Leave No Trace ethics, knots for survival and mountaineering applications, understanding mountain weather, evaluating objective and subjective hazards, and maintaining proper waste and sanitation practices. Students also gain practical experience with bear- and wildlife-aware travel techniques. Graduates leave the course with the knowledge and confidence to plan and execute their own extended backpacking trips, and with the hard skills necessary to successfully step into our 6-Day Mountaineering School. This course is ideal for those who are curious about mountaineering but have limited prior experience in the backcountry.
