Carstensz Pyramid Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrive in Bali

Arrive in Bali and transfer to your hotel. In the afternoon, meet your guide team for introductions, an expedition briefing, and a complete gear check. Overnight in Bali.

• Altitude: Bali: 100 ft

Day 2 – Flight to Central Papua

Take an early morning flight from Bali to Timika on the south coast of Central Papua. The flight is approximately 3.5–5 hours. Upon arrival, transfer to hotel and make final preparations for the helicopter flight into Carstensz Base Camp.

• Altitudes: Bali: 100 ft; Timika: 100 ft

Day 3 – Helicopter to Carstensz Base Camp

Fly by helicopter from Timika to Yellow Valley, home of Carstensz Base Camp. After settling into our pre-established expedition camp, spend the afternoon reviewing technical rope skills, including ascending and descending fixed lines and rappelling.

• Altitudes: Timika: 100 ft; Carstensz Base Camp: 14,000 ft

Day 4 – Acclimatization Day

Take a short acclimatization hike toward the base of Carstensz Pyramid to prepare for the summit attempt. Return to Base Camp for the night.

• Altitude: Basecamp 14,000 ft

Day 5 – Summit Attempt

Begin well before dawn with an alpine start to reach the base of the route. Climb fixed lines over limestone terrain, primarily on low 5th-class rock with a few slightly more difficult sections. Cross the famous Tyrolean Traverse before continuing along exposed ridge sections protected by fixed lines to the summit of Carstensz Pyramid (16,024 ft / 4,884 m), the highest point in Oceania. Descend the same route back to Base Camp.

• Climbing Time: 10–14 hours

Day 6 – Helicopter to Timika

Depart Base Camp by helicopter in the morning and return to Timika. If flight schedules permit, connect to an evening flight back to Bali. Otherwise, overnight in Timika.

• Altitudes: Carstensz Base Camp: 14,000 ft; Timika: 100 ft

Days 7–10 – Contingency Days

These additional days are reserved for weather delays or an alternate summit attempt. It is common to use one or more contingency days on this expedition.

Day 11 – Depart Bali

Depart Bali for your flight home.
